NEW YEAR stuff: Goals, Intention, Resolution and Karma.

INGNew York City Marathon just tweeted: “What’s your New Year RESOLUTION”? Which I liked, so I replied instantly, by heart: “learn meore and more”. A few minutes later I was happy to find the same thought by my Master, BKS Iyengar, who keeps saying “Ther is no end to knowledge” and we can trust him, as he’s 93.

I liked the word RESOLUTION, more than words like GOALS. Ok, goals are material stuff, things you plan, train for, organize, you learn “to make” skillfully. They are hints that help you to envision the future. Registering for next August UTMB is definetly setting a goal and implies my acceptance of training hard from now on. But it’s always projected in the future and so many things , good or/and bad can and will happen in between.

RESOLUTION, on the contrary, is like the Buddhist INTENTION: it’s not in the future, it’s in the present. It’s the “volition” that you choose to live with every moment, in the present, no matter what the outcome is. Like in the Yoga Sutras, like in the Bagavadgita: “do what you have to do, without attachment to the fruits of your actions”. “Right Intention” is the second step in the 4 noble truth of Buddhist Path. To no surprise.  I consider Right INTENTION  like a muscle, I develop it overtime by exercising, just like asanas or running. Our HEART is a muscle, isn’t it?

KARMA? DESTINY? Who cares,  I like to feel it like Buddha, who treated it as “imponderable” in itself, but you feel it right or wrong because it’s the result of a long distant… INTENTION.

Wha’t’s your INTENTION?

Namasté.
